Bridgewater Warns AI Regulation Could Increase Investor Uncertainty
NEW YORK — July 27, 2026
Bridgewater Associates has warned that increased government involvement in artificial intelligence could slow the technology's development and create greater uncertainty for investors, even as AI continues to attract significant global investment.
In a note to clients, the hedge fund's co-chief investment officers said government oversight is important for reducing the risks associated with advanced AI systems. However, they cautioned that additional regulation could affect long-term investment decisions and reduce expected returns on major AI projects.
The executives said growing regulatory oversight may disrupt the cycle of heavy spending on AI infrastructure by increasing uncertainty for companies and investors planning long-term investments.
Their comments come as the U.S. government expands its oversight of artificial intelligence. The Trump administration has introduced new measures to monitor advanced AI model releases for potential national security risks and is establishing a joint AI and cybersecurity coordination group to identify vulnerabilities and coordinate responses.
Bridgewater said it does not expect higher interest rates or weaker stock markets to significantly reduce companies' willingness to invest in AI. Instead, the firm believes the sector faces greater risks from possible setbacks in scientific progress and evolving government regulation.
The investment managers also noted that continued expansion of artificial intelligence depends on access to substantial financing. As AI projects become larger and more expensive, maintaining investor confidence will remain essential to funding future development.
Bridgewater Associates, founded by investor Ray Dalio, is one of the world's largest hedge funds and is closely watched for its views on global markets and economic trends.
